Lectionary Studies
| Hi there! I’m Rev. Robin White. Let me introduce the Lectionary Studies that we are posting on our web site, and let me tell you a little bit about who I am and why I’m doing these. Several decades ago, a number of denominations got together and selected a group of weekly readings spread out over a 3 year cycle to help their preachers and congregations explore the depths of the Bible’s riches. Today their efforts are called The Revised Common Lectionary. Like many pastors, as a matter of convenience I have followed this Lectionary for several cycles. My Presbyterian background taught me how to translate and interpret these texts, and also instilled in me an expectation of doing such study before preaching or teaching. Soon after I started pastoral ministry in MCC I decided to share my research. What you are reading is the results of over 5 years of preparing and writing these studies.
A few things about this particular set of Lectionary Studies. They are radically inclusive and are written from a gay man’s queer perspective. Sometimes you will find me maddeningly conservative and other times alarmingly liberal, but I hope over time you’ll discover that I have striven to discern a thoughtful middle way. The translations that are presented here are prepared from the original languages of Hebrew and Greek. A few commentaries and other scholarly resources were used and are noted, but for the most part these interpretations are the results of my own experience and imagination.

Liturgical colors are colors of vestments and paraments ( altar cloths) within a Christian liturgy. The symbolism of violet, white, green, red, gold, black, rose, and other colors may serve to underline moods appropriate to a season of the liturgical year or may highlight a special occasion. It is a choice of each MCC church whether traditional colors are used. If used the colors generally represent ( in the western nations)
Blue - (Advent) reminds us of the blessed eternal hope that is ours in Christ. White - (Christmas and Easter) is the color of purity, holiness, glory, and joy. ( also used for weddings and baptisms) Green - (Epiphany and after Pentecost) represents the Christian life and growth in the faith. Purple - (Lent) reminds us of our need for repentance and preparation for the celebration of Easter. Red - (Pentecost) the color of fire and blood, represents the work of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Black-The color of mourning used at funerals in the western nations and by many during periods of Lent.
